Cyclone Fengal Impacts Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh: Latest Updates

Cyclone Fengal has caused much disruption in Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh after landfall

near Puducherry on November 30, 2024. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for several districts including Chennai due to the strong winds and heavy rain brought about by the storm. The storm will continue to move at 70-90 km/h west-southwestwards towards areas between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram in the next few hours.

Here are the key points about Cyclone Fengal's impact:

  1. Cyclone Fengal made landfall near Puducherry on November 30, 2024.
  2. Red alert issued for 10 districts in Tamil Nadu, including Chennai.
  3. Winds of 70-90 km/h are expected, along with heavy rainfall.
  4. Chennai Airport operations suspended until December 1 for safety.
  5. The storm is expected to move west-southwest, affecting areas between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram.
  6. Authorities urge residents to stay indoors due to potential flooding and disruptions.
  7. IMD predicts continued heavy rains, especially in coastal and interior Tamil Nadu.

Already, the cyclone has dumped heavy rain on the coastal districts, causing much flooding and disruption. With the prospect of flash floods, it has warned people to keep indoors, particularly those in low-lying areas. It has suspended Chennai Airport's services from 4 am December 1 for precautionary reasons. The IMD forecasts that spiral bands of the cyclone will bring a greater deal of rainfall both on the coast and parts of the interiors of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka.

The weather department forecast says that the impact of the cyclone will gradually decline as it moves further inland, though the threat of heavy rainfall will remain. According to the IMD, wind speeds will also decline in the coming hours, and the destruction caused by the storm might still affect local infrastructures and farm activities.

The authorities are monitoring the situation and have asked people in affected areas to be vigilant and cautious and keep following the safety rules. The emergency services are on full alert, and evacuation is being prepared for the districts that are at the maximum risk.
